MEDINA: Pup Lost in Empty Canal Rescued by Off-Duty Firefighter

A Medina Firefighter out on his run Monday found a lost dog wandering the canal, apparently stuck. Doug Herbert, a Medina Fire Department callman, contacted the firehouse in order to rescue the stranded pooch.

A post from the Medina Fire Department’s Facebook account explained the incident. “Doug is one of our callmen. Typical fireman mentality of see a problem, fix the problem. While out on his run yesterday, he noticed this pooch down in the canal mud. He made some phone calls to his friends at the firehouse, and a short time later, he had the dog back up on dry land. Great job, Doug, and everyone who had a part in this!”

Village of Medina Trustee Tim Elliot was there, recording the incident with pictures on his phone. Afterwards, he posted his gratitude on social media, “This evening there was a report of a dog stuck in the canal (near the the basin/lumberyard). Big shout out to Doug for going above and beyond to save the dog. Along with assistance from Village of Medina, NY Fire Department, Medina Police Department K-9 Phoenix, Village of Medina Police DepartmentOrleans County Animal Control.”
