Assemblyman Mike Norris (R,C – Lockport) sent a letter to Governor Cuomo, the New York State Power Authority and New York State Canal Corporation to express his opposition to any shortened season of the Erie Canal. Norris cited the economic impact on local businesses owners and community concerns in response to a Buffalo News article regarding a potential shortened 2021 Erie Canal season published on February 2, 2021.
“Our local economy is already on the brink due to the effect of the pandemic, and New York State should be doing everything possible to support our small businesses, tourism operators and restaurants and give them every opportunity to take advantage of the significant influence the Erie Canal has on our region,” said Norris. “A shortened canal season is unacceptable.”
The assemblyman continued, “I strongly urge the New York State Power Authority and New York State Canal Corporation to make every effort to ensure that the canal season remains on its traditional, complete schedule.”
