Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz is drawing heat from several legislators within the past 24 hours after a photo posted yesterday celebrating a golf tournament win. The image highlighted a carefree atmosphere as Poloncarz was joined by multiple peers bonding within close proximity; all sixteen individuals captured opting to not wear a mask with many physically embracing.
“Wearing a mask is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength and compassion. It’s letting the rest of the public know you care about them because you are wearing a mask to protect not just yourself but others,” said Poloncarz earlier this month on Twitter. Many were quick to call out the contradiction in his statement after the social gathering photo went public.
New York State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy gave his impression, stating, “Mark Poloncarz gets caught breaking all the rules that he scolds Erie County residents every day about. Then he lies about it to WGRZ. Blatant Hypocrite. Sad.”
Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw, who until recently was vying for New York’s 27th Congressional District Seat, remarked, “I don’t want to hear Mark Poloncarz criticizing anyone not wearing a mask, not social distancing and eating communal food. His Health Dept would shut down a business for this. Hypocrite. Do as I say, not as I do. I didn’t even need security camera footage to post.”
Duane Witmer, Libertarian Candidate for New York’s 27th District, had a message for Poloncarz. “Congratulations for your amazing comeback victory in the cup! Quick question though, where is the mask? You send the DOH to shut down small businesses, devastating my friends and client’s ability to support their family. You blamed them for spreading Covid-19. You shamed neighbors into turning on neighbors,” Witmer pointed out, adding, “Are you immune to Covid as part of the ruling class? Are you better than us and the rules you pass don’t apply?”
