As Nursing Homes Continue Struggle with COVID-19, March Directive Takes Scrutiny

“They get paid to provide a service. They get regulated by the state government. There are certain rules and regulations that they must follow and we put in additional rules and regulations on nursing homes in the midst of this crisis.” 

Governor Andrew Cuomo made the aforementioned statement during an April press briefing while facing objections from nursing home officials on new rules and regulations. This includes the directive that nursing facilities take in residents who were COVID-19 positive.

Department of Health Commissioner Howard Zucker released a statement on March 25 for Nursing Home Administrators, Directors of Nursing, Directors of Social Work and Hospital Discharge Planners:

“No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the NH (Nursing Home) based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19.”
