Albion Heavyweight Outmaneuvers Last Years Champ at 52nd Annual Akron Holiday Wrestling Tournament

The Section 6 wrestling tournament finals saw notable moments from athletes in both eastern Niagara and western Orleans Counties.

At the 285-weight class Cody Wilson of Albion took a decision win after faring better in both defense and offense than opponent Jadeen Heers of Newfane, last year’s champ.

Cody’s ability to shoot a quick double and stay light on the mat clinched him the match, 4-2.

At 182 pounds Kevin Daskavitz of Lockport battled Williamsville Souths Ethan Tong.

Tong’s initial momentum was quickly thwarted by Daskavits, who maintained a strong control throughout the match until a decision win, 8-0.

At 170 pounds Akron’s Ryan Yaeger took on Simon Lingle of Newfane.

The match began competitively with Lingle exhibiting some initial control over his opponent.

Yaeger quickly turned the tide and by the second period Lingle was being taken down repeatedly.

Ultimately, Yaeger secured a decision win, 9-6.

An exciting match took place for 3rd and 4th place between Matt Ash of St. Mary’s and Amilicar Morales of Albion.

Amilcar gave a strong effort but was unable to contend with Ash’s speed.

Eventually, Matt Ash won by decision, 13-3.

In the lightweight division at 99 pounds, Gavin Ciarfella of Royalton-Hartland took on Cael Raines of Churchville-Chili.

Although both wrestlers showed a fierce intensity, Gavin’s technical ability proved difficult for Cael to handle.

Royalton-Hartland took a decision win for the match, 5-2.
