DUO ARRESTED IN ROYALTON FOR BURGLARY, LARCENY, AND CRIMINAL MISCHIEF

INCIDENT TYPE: BURGLARY ARREST

DATE/TIME: 6/24/2020 at 0316 hours 

INFORMATION: On June 24, 2020 at 03:16 a.m., Niagara County Sheriff Deputy Samantha Jones responded to an alarm at the Canalside Inn, 4431 Main Street, Gasport.

On arrival, Jones observed a window smashed to gain entry. While checking the inside of the restaurant, it was revealed that the ATM was stolen and the cash register and lottery machine had been entered. Based on prior police information, other Niagara County units were looking for a Porsche SUV as being involved in other burglaries throughout the county. Deputy Thomas Battaglia spotted a Porsche SUV headed westbound on Saunders Settlement Road in the Town of Cambria.

The vehicle did not yield to Deputy Battaglia and refused to stop. Captain Aaron Schultz, with assistance from two Lewiston Police units, laid down spike strips and disabled a tire on the Porsche causing it to stop on Saunders Settlement near Chew Road in the Town of Lewiston.

The driver was identified as Michael C. Stewart, 53, and the passenger as Anna L. McLaughlin, 39, both of Niagara Falls. Evidence from the burglary was observed in the vehicle. The vehicle was secured and towed from the scene. Investigators Marc Reele and Stephen Gaydos charged both Stewart and McLaughlin with Burglary 3rd degree (D felony), Grand Larceny 3rd degree(D felony), and Criminal Mischief 2nd degree(D felony). Deputy Battaglia added multiple vehicle and traffic charges on Stewart. Both were held for central arraignment at the Niagara County Jail this morning. Investigation continuing by Criminal Investigation Bureau into other possible crimes committed by these individuals.
