A look at the Erie Canal in Middleport, are these damages just cosmetic? – New York State says: Yes.

The Board of Trustees for Middleport have been clear in their assessment of damages to the Erie Canal running through the Village, proposing this damage should position them for more repair funding from the State due to unsafe conditions.

State authorities are not convinced.  An assessment done over a year ago by the New York State Canal Corporation, (financially accountable to and under the ownership of the New York State Power Authority,) deemed these damages as cosmetic or superficial.

What do you think?

A conversation with Middleport Mayor Richard Westcott unveiled that these damages will again be inspected by the New York State Canal Corporation within the next few months.

The hope is minds can be changed so these damages can receive more State funding and be fixed.

  1. I totally agree. I don’t believe they are just cosmetic.
There is enough structure damage that some of the walls will fall from the sides in the near future. Squeaky wheel gets the grease!, Don’t give up!, resubmit, again and again, till they answer positively.

  2. This is a popular area for fishermen and their families. That looks like a potentially dangerous situation for anybody that is walking near that edge. It may be structurally sound, but that crumbling concrete is a liability and looks terrible.
